The ahead-of-time (AOT) cache: faster startups

Reviewed October 26, 2026 1 min read

The Hytale server ships with a pre-trained ahead-of-time cache, HytaleServer.aot. Starting with it improves boot times by skipping the JIT warm-up.

How it works

Java normally spends the first moments after starting compiling the code it uses most (the «JIT warm-up»). The AOT cache, a Java feature described in JEP 514, lets the server start with much of that work already done. The official launch command is java -XX:AOTCache=HytaleServer.aot -jar HytaleServer.jar --assets Assets.zip.

On our servers

It's the «Use Ahead-of-Time Cache» startup option. Leave it on: it only affects how fast the server starts, not your world.

Worth knowing

The cache belongs to the server version it came with. After an update the new server brings its own.
