Authenticated vs offline mode

Reviewed October 26, 2026 1 min read

The Hytale server has an --auth-mode option with two values: authenticated (the default) and offline. On our servers it's one of the server's startup options.

The two modes

ModeWhat it means
authenticated (default)The server is authenticated with Hytale's services. This is the normal mode for a public or community server.
offlineThe server runs without that authentication.

Why authenticated is the default

The official manual explains that servers require authentication to communicate with Hytale's service APIs and to counter abuse. Stick with authenticated unless you have a specific, private reason not to.

Worth knowing

If you think you need to change this option and can't from your panel's Startup tab, open a ticket and tell us why; we'll look at it with you.
