A mod won't load: what to check

Reviewed October 26, 2026 1 min read

If you installed a mod and nothing changed, the cause is almost always one of a few simple things.

Check these in order

  1. Is it in the right folder?

It must be directly in mods/, as a .zip or .jar. A mod inside another folder, or unzipped, won't load.

  2. Did you restart?

Mods are loaded at startup. Uploading a file while the server runs doesn't load it.

  3. Does the console say anything?

Read the startup lines in the console or in logs/. Errors about a missing dependency or an incompatible version are the most common.

  4. Is it up to date?

After a game update, a mod built for the previous version may stop working until its author updates it.

Isolate it

Temporarily move the other mods out of mods/ and start with only the problem one. If it loads alone, another mod is conflicting with it.
