The official manual is direct about it: view distance is the main driver of RAM usage. Hypixel recommends limiting the maximum view distance to 12 chunks (384 blocks) for both performance and gameplay.
Why it costs so much
Every player keeps the area around them loaded. The further they can see, the more of the world sits in memory, and the area grows much faster than the distance does. The manual notes that Hytale's default of 384 blocks is roughly the same as 24 Minecraft chunks, so expect higher RAM usage than on a Minecraft server with default settings.
How to use this
- If the server runs short of memory, lower the view distance before anything else.
- Consider Nitrado:PerformanceSaver, which limits view distance dynamically based on resource usage.
- Tune the value for your expected player count, as the manual suggests.
