A new server works out of the box, but a few minutes of setup avoid the usual first-day problems: nobody can join, strangers join, or a mod update breaks everything.
Do these in order
- Authenticate the server
Run
/auth login devicein the console and approve the code. Without it, nobody can connect. - Join it yourself
Add the address and port from the panel in the game's Servers menu and check you can get in.
- Decide who can join
If it's a private server, set up the whitelist before sharing the address.
- Set the view distance sensibly
View distance is the biggest RAM driver. The official recommendation is a maximum of 12 chunks (384 blocks).
- Take a first backup
Before adding mods or inviting people, make a backup from the panel so you have a clean point to go back to.
Drop mods into mods/, restart and check the console. Adding several at once makes it hard to know which one broke something.
