Both games are block-based and both servers run on Java, but a Hytale server behaves differently in a few places that matter on day one.
Side by side
| Hytale | Minecraft Java | |
|---|---|---|
| Protocol and port | QUIC over UDP, default 5520 | TCP, default 25565 |
| Java | Java 25 | Depends on the version |
| Mods | Run on the server; players don't install them | Mod loaders usually need the mods on the client too |
| Linking servers | Built in: referrals, redirects, fallbacks | Needs a proxy such as Velocity or BungeeCord |
| First start | The server must be authenticated (/auth login device) | Accept the EULA |
| Domain without port (SRV) | Not supported yet | Supported |
View distance costs more
The official manual points out that Hytale's default view distance of 384 blocks is roughly the same as 24 Minecraft chunks, far more than Minecraft's default of 10 chunks. Expect more RAM per player than you are used to, and tune view distance first.
