If the console shows java.lang.OutOfMemoryError, the server tried to use more memory than it had. It usually crashes right after.
What to do
- Look at what was happening
Many players exploring? A new mod? A world generating fast? The moment of the crash tells you what used the memory.
- Lower the view distance
The official manual names it as the main driver of RAM usage, and recommends 12 chunks at most.
- Remove unneeded mods
Each mod takes memory, before anyone even joins.
- Upgrade if it's normal use
If it happens on an ordinary evening, the server needs a bigger plan. You only pay the difference for the rest of the month.
The calculator gives a memory estimate from your players, mods and view distance.
