A Hytale server is a program that keeps your world running and decides what is true in it. Players connect with the normal game; the server holds the world, the players' data and the mods.
Who does what
| The server | The player's game |
|---|---|
| Stores the world in its universe/ folder | Draws what the server sends |
| Runs NPCs, mobs and world generation | Shows them |
| Loads the mods from its mods/ folder | Receives the server's content when joining |
| Applies permissions, the whitelist and bans | Asks and accepts the answer |
What this means in practice
- The server keeps running when you log off. That is what a hosted server is for.
- Hytale was designed so that mods run on the server: players join and play without installing them.
- The official server needs at least 4 GB of memory and Java 25, which is why our Hytale plans start at 4 GB.
Sharing your world vs. a server
Hytale can also open a singleplayer world to friends with a share code. That only works while your game is open; a server keeps the world online all the time.
