Mods on a Hytale server: install them once, everyone gets them

The best thing about modding Hytale is what you don't have to do: no modpack, no «install these 40 files first» message to your friends.

How mods work on Hytale

Minecraft mods usually live on both sides: the server runs Forge or Fabric, and every player installs the same mods. Hytale moves all of it to the server. You manage one folder; players join and see whatever the server runs. Do players need to install mods?

Installing a mod, step by step

  1. Back up

One click in the panel. If the mod misbehaves, you go back in a minute.

  2. Download it

From the mod's official page; the manual mentions sources like CurseForge.

  3. Upload it to mods/

With the panel's file manager or SFTP, as it is: don't unzip it.

  4. Restart and read the console

Mods load at startup; errors show up in the console and in logs/.

PluginWhat it does
Nitrado:PerformanceSaverLimits view distance dynamically based on resource usage
Nitrado:QueryExposes the server's status (players and so on) over HTTP
Nitrado:WebServerA base plugin for web applications and APIs
ApexHosting:PrometheusExporterDetailed server and JVM metrics

View distance is the biggest RAM driver on Hytale, which is why PerformanceSaver is the most useful of the four for a typical server. More on these plugins.

Choosing mods that won't hurt you

  • Official pages only. A mod runs with full access to your server.
  • Recently updated. After a game update, old mods are the first to break.
  • No «free premium» versions. Cracked paid mods are a classic way to spread malicious code.
  • Read the requirements. Some mods depend on others.

Keeping mods alive through updates

Client and server must be on the same version, so you can't freeze your server on an old version to protect your mods. The routine that works: back up, update, read the console, move broken mods out, put them back when their authors update. Mods after an update.

What mods cost in memory

Every mod takes memory before anyone joins. A handful of light mods barely shows; dozens of content mods do. Our calculator includes mods in its Hytale estimate. How much RAM you need.

If you remember one thing

Put mods in mods/, restart, read the console, one at a time. Back up before every update, and keep only the mods your players would miss.

Questions people ask

In the server's mods/ folder, as .zip or .jar files.

No. Hytale runs mods on the server.

Updates can change what mods rely on. Wait for an updated version or remove the mod until then.

From each mod's official page. Hypixel's manual mentions sources like CurseForge.
