How much RAM does a Hytale server need? It depends on one setting

On Minecraft, the question is «how many players?». On Hytale, the better question is «how far can they see, and do they stick together?».

The official minimum: 4 GB

Hypixel's server manual sets the floor at 4 GB of memory. Our smallest Hytale plan, Copper, has exactly that, because a plan below the official minimum would be selling something that doesn't work properly.

What actually fills the memory

WhatEffect on RAMSource
View distanceThe biggest driverOfficial manual
Players exploring independentlyEach one loads their own areaOfficial manual
ModsEach one adds a fixed amountDepends on the mod
Extra worldsEach loaded world adds its ownOfficial manual: one main thread per world

The manual adds a useful comparison: Hytale's default view distance of 384 blocks is about 24 Minecraft chunks, while Minecraft's default is 10. That's why the same number of players needs more memory on Hytale. View distance explained.

Estimates for common servers

These come from our calculator's Hytale model, with view distance at 12 chunks (Hypixel's recommended maximum). Treat them as a starting point; your panel's memory graph is the real answer.

How to tell your server is short of RAM

  • Memory sits near the limit in the panel for long stretches.
  • CPU climbs without more players: Java's garbage collector is working harder. The manual names this as the typical symptom.
  • Regular stutters every few seconds.
  • An OutOfMemoryError in the console, and a crash. What to do.

If you remember one thing

Start on 4 GB with view distance at 12 chunks or less, watch the memory graph on your busiest evening, and move up only when it stays near the limit.

Questions people ask

For a few friends with sensible settings, yes. It's the official minimum.

It depends on view distance and whether they explore apart. The table above and our calculator give estimates.

Only if the server is short of memory. If CPU is the bottleneck, more RAM won't help.

Hypixel recommends limiting the maximum to 12 chunks (384 blocks).
