The official manual names high player or entity counts (NPCs, mobs) as the driver of CPU usage. Every entity has to be updated, again and again, while it's loaded.
Ways to reduce the load
- Avoid huge gatherings of mobs in one place, such as overgrown farms near spawn.
- Turn NPC spawning off in worlds that don't need it (
IsSpawningNPCin the world'sconfig.json). - Remember that each world has its own main thread: a very busy world is better split into its own world than packed into the main one.
Worth knowing
If CPU stays high with few entities around, check memory too: a server short of RAM also burns CPU on garbage collection.
