Four gigabytes is the line where modded Minecraft becomes possible instead of theoretical. It is also the plan most people end up on, which is why it carries the popular badge.
On the plugin side this is comfortable territory: a Paper server with twenty or thirty plugins and twenty-odd players online, without the memory graph ever getting interesting.
On the modded side it is the honest starting line. A Fabric base takes 1.5 GB before your first mod, so you are left with roughly 1.8 GB of working room — enough for a curated pack of forty to sixty mods with a small group, or a lighter Forge pack. It is not enough for All The Mods or Create: Above and Beyond, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling you a stutter.
Ares is also the last plan without splitter slots. If you are heading toward a network rather than a single world, the jump to Atenea is the one that matters.
What actually runs on it
- Paper with 20–30 plugins and around 20 players
- A curated Fabric pack of 40–60 mods for a small group
- Lighter Forge packs — think tech-only or magic-only
- A busy public SMP with claims, economy and minigames
What it will not run
- Kitchen-sink packs like All The Mods or ATM-scale Forge builds
- Modded worlds with more than about eight players at once
- A multi-server network — that starts at Atenea
Running a big pack, or planning a lobby plus a survival server? Atenea adds 2 GB and the first two splitter slots.
